EPPS 6338 (GISC 6338) Hazard and Disaster Management (3 semester credit hours) This course will acquaint students with the realm of disasters that have shaped, overwhelmed, and altered human lives throughout history. It will begin by examining the causes, characteristics, and historical occurrences of various disasters, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, tsunamis, and man-made disasters from different countries around the world. Subsequently, the course will delve into the repercussions of these hazards and how they impact our lives, as well as social and economic structures. Students will also become familiar with key concepts and terminology used by disaster professionals to describe and report the effects of disasters. Lastly, students will gain an understanding of how governments and relief organizations are involved in evacuating, mitigating, and managing communities affected by disasters. (3-0) Y
