HONS 3102 William Faulkner's Short Stories (1 semester credit hour) Famed for his work as a novelist, William Faulkner was an equally accomplished writer of short fiction. This course will examine ten to twelve of his short stories in order to see the various ways in which he met the demands of what he called "the most demanding form after poetry." HONS 3103 Honey Bees and Society (1 semester credit hour) Explores topics ranging from the biology of individual bees to how the colony as a superorganism makes decisions. Covers concepts from history through modern agriculture to give a complete view of the importance of honey bees in our culture. Prerequisite: CV Honors students only. (1-0) S

HONS 3105 Memory (1 semester credit hour) Explores contemporary topics in neuroscience, biology, and psychology related to memory. Focuses on understanding the fundamental nature of memory, diseases of memory, and extraordinary cases related to memory. (1-0) T

HONS 3106 Positive Psychology (1 semester credit hour) Through the lens of philosophy, history and psychology, this course provides an overview on the science related to happiness and optimal well being. Readings explore the biological, psychological, social, and emotional influences of contemporary positive psychology and its real-life applications. (1-0) R

HONS 3107 Early Chinese Literature (1 semester credit hour) Explores major writers and works (including poetry, fiction, scripture, and historical prose) from early Chinese literary history. HONS 3114 Scientific Research Concepts (1 semester credit hour) Explores contemporary interdisciplinary topics on the practice of scientific research and the scientific method. HONS 3115 Exploring Research at UT Dallas (1 semester credit hour) Explores opportunities to get involved in undergraduate research at UT Dallas. Focuses on learning about active areas of research at UT Dallas and includes weekly lectures from leading UT Dallas faculty. (1-0) Y

HONS 3116 Excellence (1 semester credit hour) Critically investigates the differences in successful and unsuccessful people beyond impressive titles, degrees or income. Readings focus on skill sets, disciplines, and opportunities that can influence results in life, business, or even sports that transform merely very good to elite. Explore incredible examples that may provide guidelines for inner strength, amazing experiences, and a meaningful life. (1-0) R

HONS 3117 Science Plays (1 semester credit hour) Explores contemporary interdisciplinary topics in science plays. Focuses on works bringing scientific ideas into the theater where playwrights constitute excellent avenues for exploring the lives, struggles, and successes of scientists. (1-0) R

HONS 3118 Sherlock Holmes (1 semester credit hour) Explores the development and evolution of the character Sherlock Holmes, his enduring appeal, and the ways in which representations of Holmes reveal something about our changing cultural values. Prerequisite: CV Honors students only. (1-0) R

HONS 3119 Medieval Chinese Literature (1 semester credit hour) Explores major writers and works (including poetry, fiction, scripture, and historical prose) from medieval Chinese literary history. Background readings for historical and cultural context are provided. (1-0) R

HONS 3120 Society Against the State (1 semester credit hour) Explores radical ideas, ideas arising at the margins of society, ideas of criticism, protest, and revolution. Focuses on a selection of theoretical approaches that offer fundamental critiques of unjust institutional practices, systemic modes of oppression, and deleterious cultural values. Prerequisite: CV Honors students only. (1-0) R

HONS 3121 Combinatorics (1 semester credit hour) This course uses interesting and accessible math papers to expose students to objects and ideas that are often overlooked in more traditional classroom courses. Past topics have included surreal numbers, negative probability, tiling problems, alternating sign matrices, NP-hardness of classic Nintendo games, and RSA cryptography. Prerequisite: CV Honors students only. (1-0) R

HONS 3122 Love, Death, and Hormones (1 semester credit hour) Explores contemporary interdisciplinary topics in physiology and how, when things go wrong, they can be fatal. Prerequisite: CV Honors students only. (1-0) R
