CHEM 3461 Biochemistry I (4 semester credit hours) Structures and chemical properties of amino acids; protein purification and characterization; protein structure and thermodynamics of polypeptide chain folding; catalytic mechanisms, kinetics, and regulation of enzymes; energetics of biochemical reactions; generation and storage of metabolic energy associated with carbohydrates; oxidative phosphorylation and electron transport mechanisms; photosynthesis. Problem solving methodology in biochemistry; discussion of recent advances in areas related to the subject matter. Prerequisites: (CHEM 2323 or equivalent) and (CHEM 2325 or equivalent).
