NOTES:
1 Curriculum Requirements can be fulfilled by other approved courses from accredited institutions of higher education. The courses listed are recommended as the most efficient way to satisfy both Core Curriculum and Major Requirements at UT Dallas.
2 Students completing the 020 requirement with a MATH course must complete ALEKS exam prior to enrollment. PHIL 2303 does not require the ALEKS exam.
3 Major Preparatory - PHIL 2303 and 3 semester credit hours from the following (PHIL 1301, PHIL 1305, or PHIL 1306) NOTE: If the student took one of these courses as their core, then the student may choose any free elective in its place as a lower-level major requirement.
4Major Distribution - 12 semester credit hours
  • 6 semester credit hours in History of Philosophy from two different periods - (PHIL 2316 or PHIL 3322) or (PHIL 2317 or PHIL 3323) or (PHIL 3323 or PHIL 3324)
  • 6 semester credit hours of upper-division courses from the following types (Must be in two different course types) - Major Figures (PHIL 4326) or Great Texts (PHIL 4327) or Traditions ( PHIL 3321 or PHIL 4322) or Topics (PHIL 4380 or any of the following: PHIL 3309, PHIL 3320, PHIL 3328, PHIL 3338, PHIL 3357, PHIL 3373, PHIL 3375, PHIL 4308, PHIL 4321, PHIL 4323, PHIL 4324, PHIL 4325, PHIL 4330, PHIL 4331, PHIL 4332, PHIL 4333, PHIL 4344).
5Major Elective - 12 semester credit hours of upper-division Philosophy electives.
6Major Related - 6 semester credit hours of courses from the approved list of courses with significant philosophical content.
7Free Elective - any lower or upper-level course. Students may need to take some as upper-level to meet the university requirement of earning a minimum of 45 semester credit hours of upper-level courses.
Be sure to check prerequisites of 2000-level or higher courses.
