NOTES:
1 Curriculum Requirements can be fulfilled by other approved courses from accredited institutions of higher education. The courses listed are recommended as the most efficient way to satisfy both Core Curriculum and Major Requirements at UT Dallas.
2 Students completing the 020 requirement with a MATH course must complete ALEKS exam prior to enrollment. PHIL 2303 does not require the ALEKS exam.
3 LATS Prepatory Requirement - HIST 2350 and 6 semester credit hours from LIT 2350, HIST 3301, or GEOG 2303. Note: If a major prep course is also used for the core curriculum, the student may take a free elective instead.
4 Foreign Language Requirement - any SPAN language course (or approved course of another language relevant to Latin American Studies). If a language course is also used for the core curriculum, the student may take a free elective instead.
5 Major Core - LATS 3301 and (HIST 3398 or HIST 3339)
6 Major Elective - 18 semester credit hours - Students must complete courses from the following list in at least two disciplinary areas. Students must complete at least 9 semester credit hours in a single disciplinary area.
  • History Electives: HIST 3391, HIST 3398, HIST 3399, HIST 4369, HIST 4359, HIST 3397, or other HIST courses with emphasis on Latin America may be considered.
  • Social Science Electives: CRIM 3319, GEOG 2302, GEOG 2309, GEOG 3359, GEOS 2321, PSCI 4348 or other geographical, political, and economic courses with emphasis on Latin America may be considered.
  • Language, Literature, and Culture Electives: LATS 3301, LATS 3302, LATS 3303, LATS 4329, any 3000-4000-level SPAN courses, and (LANG 4348 or LIT 3319 or LIT 3337 with a Latin American related subtitle).
7 Free Elective - any lower or upper-level course. Students may need to take some as upper-level to meet the university requirement of earning a minimum of 51 semester credit hours of upper-level courses.
Students wishing to pursue a teacher certification should see an advisor for additional requirements.
Be sure to check prerequisites of 2000-level or higher courses.
