1Incoming freshmen must enroll and complete requirements of UNIV 1010 and the corresponding school-related freshman seminar course. Students, including transfer students, who complete their core curriculum at UT Dallas must take UNIV 2020.
2Curriculum Requirements can be fulfilled by other approved courses from accredited institutions of higher education. The courses listed are recommended as the most efficient way to satisfy both Core Curriculum and Major Requirements at UT Dallas.
3 Indicates a prerequisite class to be completed before enrolling for upper-division classes. Specific prerequisites are required for certain upper-division courses. Review requirements for your major and choose accordingly.
4 A required course in the Major that also fulfills a Core Curriculum requirement. Semester credit hours are counted in Core Curriculum. Students must choose a different course for each Core Curriculum category:
  • BA 1310 or BA 1320 or ECON 2301 or ECON 2302 fulfills 3 semester credit hours of 080 Social and Behavioral Sciences Core Curriculum (if not applied towards other Core Curriculum requirements) and a Major Preparatory requirement
  • MATH 1326 fulfills 3 semester credit hours 090 Component Area Option Core Curriculum (if not applied towards other Core Curriculum requirements) and a Major Preparatory requirement
  • BA 1310 or BA 1320 or ECON 2301 or ECON 2302 fulfills 3 semester credit hours of 090 Component Area Option Core Curriculum (if not applied towards other Core Curriculum requirements) and a Major Preparatory requirement
5 MATH 1325 is required for all JSOM undergraduate students. Students may substitute MATH 2413 or MATH 2417 for MATH 1325. Students may substitute MATH 2414 or MATH 2419 for MATH 1326. Students who complete OPRE 3340 instead of MATH 1326 or MATH 2414 or MATH 2419 will require another course to satisfy the 090 Component Area Option Core Curriculum requirement.
6 To make timely degree progress, students should complete MATH 1325 or its equivalent by the end of their first semester at UT Dallas. Students who will not meet this requirement should contact their academic advisor to discuss their degree timeline.
7 Students may substitute MATH 2333 or MATH 2418 or CS 2305 for OPRE 3333.
8 JSOM first-time-in-college freshmen are required to take BCOM 1300 in their first semester. Transfer students and students new to JSOM are required to take BCOM 3300 in their first semester.
9 Free Electives: 3-6 semester credit hours are required for the B.S. in Finance. Students who complete OPRE 3340 instead of MATH 1326 or MATH 2414 or MATH 2419 will require another 090 Component Area Option Core course and 3 semester credit hours of free electives to meet the 120 semester credit hour requirement for graduation. Students who complete MATH 1326 or MATH 2414 or MATH 2419 instead of OPRE 3340 will require 3 semester credit hours of free electives (for a total of 6 semester credit hours) to meet the 120 semester credit hour requirement for graduation.
10 Finance Guided Electives: 21 semester credit hours - please refer to degree plan or undergraduate catalog for specific courses. Any upper-division courses listed in guided electives with FIN prefix can satisfy guided elective requirements in prior BS FIN catalogs if not used elsewhere on the student's degree plan. With advanced written permission from the BS FIN Program Director, upper-division courses with a course prefix of ACCT, MATH, or STAT not used elsewhere on the degree plan may fulfill one guided elective.
11 A Practicum (Internship) of at least 160 working hours is required for all JSOM majors. FIN 4V80 taken for up to 3 semester credit hours may apply towards free or guided electives. FIN 4080 or BA 4090 will fulfill degree requirement only. Students who are employed in full-time jobs may fulfill their internship requirement with their current employer as a special project for registration in BA 4090 with preapproval from their program director. 12 FIN 4080 or BA 4090 is required if not completing FIN 4V80 for guided elective credit. 13 A Community Engagement Experience is required for all JSOM majors in fall 2018 catalog or later. Students may fulfill requirement with BPS 4396 or ENTP 4340 or IMS 4335 or MKT 4360 for 3 semester credit hours free elective, or with BA 4095 upon completion of 100 service hours for 0-hour degree requirement only. 14 BA 4095 is required, if not completing BPS 4396 or ENTP 4340 or IMS 4335 or MKT 4360 for 3 semester credit hours free elective. 15 ECON 2301 and ECON 2302 are required for students who double major in Finance and Economics.
