BIOL4305 - Molecular Evolution

BIOL 4305 Molecular Evolution (3 semester credit hours) Principles and models of evolutionary theory at the molecular level. Evolution of nucleotide sequences including genes, pseudogenes, genomes and amino acid sequences; evolution of proteins, protein complexes, and interactions. Phylogenetics and current leading quantitative models of sequence evolution; statistical methods on amino acid coevolution and its connections to molecular structure and function. Examples of molecular evolution include protein interactions, signaling networks, and viral evolution. Computational tools and algorithms used to study evolution at the molecular level. Prerequisites: BIOL 3401 or BIOL 3461 or CHEM 3461 or equivalents or instructor consent required. (3-0) T
